I possess a partiality for irregular houses, when you go up and down steps, out of one room into another and when you come upon more rooms when you think you have seen all there are, and where then is a bountiful provision of little halls & passages, and where you find older rooms in unexpected places with lattice windows and green growth pressing through them.

Three years before the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granted suffrage to women nationwide in 1920, women in New York won a hard fought battle for the ballot. Historians Susan Goodier and Karen Pastorello will tell their story, touching on how a diverse web of grassroots activists led to a successful referendum in the Empire State, and how that story reinvigorated a national movement for women to gain the vote. Goodier and Pastorello will also sign copies of their acclaimed book, Women Will Vote: Winning Suffrage in New York State (2017).
Dr. Susan Goodier is a Lecturer in History at SUNY Oneonta and Dr. Karen Pastorello is a Professor of History at Tompkins Cortland Community College. Both are leading scholars in the fields of women’s history, reform, and the 19th century.
This event will be held at the Carriage House Theater behind the Cayuga Museum of History and Art. Admission is $10 for museum members, $15 for the general public. Reservations are recommended.
