Seward & Stanton: Friends, Rivals, & Colleagues

Nov 12th 2017 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

*The lecture will take place at Westmister Presbyterian Church (17 William St, Auburn, NY)*

Renowned historian Walter Stahr, author of Seward: Lincoln’s Indispensable Man (2012), returns to Auburn to discuss his latest biography drawn from President Lincoln’s vaunted “Team of Rivals” cabinet, Edwin Stanton. The recently-released book, Stanton: Lincoln’s War Secretary (2017), is being widely praised. Reviewers have heralded it as “a masterly account of one of the great characters of the Civil War” and “a work of stunning force and literary excellence.”

In a presentation uniquely and exclusively prepared for Mr. Seward’s hometown, Stahr explores the lives, careers, and legacies of Seward and Stanton in tandem. He reveals a complex relationship of simultaneous warmth and tension, competiveness and compassion, trust and suspicion between Lincoln’s Secretaries of State and War. As each man jockeyed for position with their President, both also learned to form bonds in service of the greatest crisis of their age: the Civil War.

Stahr will sign copies of Seward and Stanton after his talk. Both will be available for sale at the event.
